LiquidBody at International Music Day Festival in Greece June 21, 2002 Performing with World Music of Nana on an outdoor stage in front of Zapion within view of the Acropolis in Athens, LiquidBody Dance helped celebrate the first International Music Day Festival in Greece. A long-standing tradition in France, musicians across Europe are now taking to the streets and offering free concerts on Summer Solstice. The concert was sponsored by Kozmoz FM, a radio station that frequently plays Nana’s music and has a sister station in NYC. We are invited to perform again next year.

World Music of Nana Concerts Continue Taking Dance into Unlikely Places Fall 2001-Fall 2002 LiquidBody Dance continues as a guest artist with the Music of Nana performing live musical concerts of sensuous world fusion music and taking modern dance to some surprising places. All of the music is orginal and features music from Nana’s newest CD Daughters of the Sun which hit #1 on the New Age and World charts this summer. It can be heard on over 500 radio stations nationwide. Nana plays the 19-stringed Indian sitar, the Greek Byzantine-style bouzouki and sings in Greek, English, Yoruba and Hindi with Caryn Heilman accompaniing her on Middle Eastern frame drums and voice. Two LiquidBody dances form part of the concert which often includes one or more musical guests on cello, bass, didgeridu, tablas, glass armonica, monochord. The first dance, Invocation, is about resonance and uses the metaphor of a Chinese gong. The second, After Dark, is a response to the resonance of the sitar and the energy flow between performer and audience.

Premiere of “Meeting in the Shimmer” September 11, 2002 Joining 34 artists of all disciplines as they considered how the events of 9/11 continued to resonate in their personal and artistic lives, one year later, LiquidBody Dance participated in Dixon Place’s AfterImages concert - an incredible evening of reflective art that acknowledged grief and simultaneously channeled it into redemptive creative growth. “Meeting in the Shimmer” points to a place where it is possible to connect with each other in a fundamentally creative and regenerative way which may deepen the possibility of birthing new structures that will sustain life. Working with the image of the egg (designed by visual artist Paul Wirhun) and the activation of the embryogenetic field through extremely slow, qualitative C-curve spinal movement, LiquidBody Dance initiates a dialogue with the audience through a simple hand and spine movement sequence coupled with the sounding of names transformed into a mantra of vibrational relationship. The magic of connection is further enhanced by the live sound of the World Music of Nana which included Kani Barrett on cello and waterphone; Nana Simopoulos on sitar, voice and water; and Daniel Dickin on didgeridu. The voiced names are recorded each time the piece is performed and added to subsequent performances as the piece continues to grow in its relational scope.
